Thanks for your service Your Worship!

At the recent Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce Political Power Hour held on Wednesday, March 16 Mayor Jones announced that he would not be running for reelection this fall. This marking 24 years on Douro Dummer Council and has established himself as the longest serving Warden for Peterborough County.

It's a big deal for political followers and politicians alike. It takes a particular skill to be able to earn the trust and respect of your colleagues and the community. Mayor Jones has been able to do this, through repeated elections - often acclaimed with no challengers. No small feat indeed but it's not a surprise because Mayor Jones is a great community leader.

I won't even try to list the accomplishments that our Mayor has throughout his tenure. There are so many that one could write a book and further, I'm certain my recollection would only scratch the surface of the many initiatives that he's been part of. I'll leave that to more experienced political watchers and the local journalists and historians to document.

What I can say easily that while the formal title has been Warden and Mayor for many years, there are several other regional and provincial groups that our Mayor has been part of. This requires an enormous commitment and the ability to work with competing priorities. It also requires big picture thinking and a willingness to find compromise.

  • Twenty four years of taking resident phone calls and emails at all hours from happy and not-so-happy residents.
  • Twenty four years of building consensus and working with a host of changing political leaders.
  • Twenty four years of attending events, being a community ambassador and delivering speeches.
  • Twenty four years of putting the community needs above family.
  • And twenty four years of leadership.

Mayor Jones, it has been an honour to work on Council with you and a privilege to know you. Our community is better because of all that you have done. Thank you for your service.
