As a business owner and former Board Member of the Kawartha Chamber, I was in attendance to help celebrate those recognized. After hearing the accomplishments of those recognized, I can tell you first hand that area businesses are doing amazing things!
Of particular note, we had a number of businesses in Douro Dummer Township who were finalists.
In the Not-For-Profit Category – Camp Kawartha was one of the finalists. In the past year I’ve had the opportunity to attend a number of events and meetings there and I expect that we will be hearing more from them in the near future. Camp Kawartha is recognized nationally for the work that they do in demonstrating and teaching sustainability not just to our youth but to our educators as well, resulting in scalable efforts to create an appreciation for the environment and the outdoors.
For Tourism/Hospitality Excellence – Warsaw’s sweetest escape Kawartha Buttertart Factory brought home the hardware for their work in putting the community on the map. Their participation in the Buttertart Tour, being recognized by Chatelaine Magazine and a home to many local coffee meetings makes their business top notch. Cathy and Chris announced that they will be opening at their new location at Hwy. 28 & County Road 4 in February. I’m excited to see what is in store for them!
The Outstanding Business Achievement recognized finalist T.G. Quirk Garage. Celebrating 50 years in business this year, Terry, Shirley and family are a cornerstone in our community. I’m sure Terry and the family could share many stories from back in the day, cars towed, gas prices and how the area has changed. When I was talking to the family at the awards I’ve been assured that they’re working on the next 50 years.
Finally, the Young Professional Award was presented to Jillian Harrington of Clearview Cottage Resort. Jillian and her wife came back home to run the family business after her father Brian passed away. The business has continued to see success as it looks to the new generation of creating memories for families. Earlier this Spring I had an opportunity to tour the grounds and can see that the 3-season resort in Young’s Point has created a lifetime of memories and will continue to do so with Jillian’s leadership.
Congratulations to all the finalists and award winners with special hugs and applause to those of you in Douro Dummer who continue to choose to do business in our community, employing local residents and attracting people near and far to our corner of the world.
